Hilary J. Corts: Visualising Music

What better way to welcome in 2012 than with photography that captures the spirit of a party, that ephemeral beauty when you watch live music and draws you in, clearing your mind of everything else that could possibly have happened before or could ever happen after. For that one split second, when you’re bouncing up and down with the swathes of hot bodies around you, when you’re truly captivated.

Brooklyn-based photographer, Hilary J Corts came out of Syracuse into the world of New York live music and hit the ground running. Her immediate love for discovering new music and being an active part of the live scene propelled her into music photography – opening the velvet ropes to gigs. From big names like Incubus and Eisley to breakthrough artists, Corts is quickly becoming part of the music scene herself – capturing a striking anthology of great live and behind-the-scenes moments.

Artist’s Statement:

I was first introduced to live music concerts by an older friend who took me under her wing in the beginning of my teens. The concept of listening to music as a hobby was new to me, but I was soon swept up in the excitement of searching for and discovering new music that I wouldn’t find on the radio, then driving out to Syracuse to see these bands play when they came through on tour. I managed to attend sometimes as many as three shows a week, ranging from hardcore shows in basements and warehouses (or wherever anyone would let them play) to singer-songwriter performances in tiny coffee shops. I took my camera along to document this powerful environment that totally captivated me from day one.
